Community Foundation of Central Illinois Competitive Grant Cycle

Frequently Asked Questions

Does our organization qualify for your grant cycle?
If your organization has a Federal IRS tax-exempt letter proving that the organization is a not-for-profit organization then the organization qualifies. State/county/local government agencies are also eligible with their tax exempt status letter.

Your organization must be able to demonstrate that services are provided to those who live within the CFCI service area (within a 50-mile radius of the city of Peoria, IL).

Does my project qualify for the Community Foundation of Central Illinois Grant Process?
If the organization is a not-for-profit and the project meets one or more of the objectives that CFCI strives to meet in funding (located on the grant guidelines, posted on the website here) then your project is a good fit for our competitive grant process.

Please note: CFCI does not fund: 1) Annual campaigns, 2) individuals, 3) endowments, 4) grants made for sectarian religious purposes (we do fund religious organizations/churches if the project serves people outside of their walls, for example: South Side Mission is faith based, or a church may serve the prison population, etc.).

How much money should we request in our proposal?
Your organization may request up to $15,000. Due to the economic impact, the trend in the last few CFCI grant cycles has been up to about $5000.

What is a Federal IRS tax exempt letter?
The IRS Federal tax exempt letter proves that your organization is functioning as a 501(c)(3) organization with non-profit status. This letter also documents the organization’s Employer Identification Number (EIN).

I cannot find the Federal IRS tax exempt letter, what should I do?
If you are unable to find this letter and need proof of non-profit status, please go to the Illinois Secretary of State’s website to obtain a certificate. Follow this link: http://www.ilsos.gov/corporatellc/, enter the name of your organization, and click submit.

A certificate that indicates your non-profit status and good standing will appear. This may be used in lieu of an official IRS tax exempt letter.

When will we know if we receive the grant or not?
The CFCI will notify your organization by mail within 60 days of the grant proposal due date.
